The Port Chilkoot Distillery’s 50 Fathoms Gin has earned another major award, snagging a Double Gold Medal at the 15th annual San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The distillery’s product was one of 10 gins to win Double Gold worldwide, with other winners hailing from Germany, Denmark, Austria, Spain and England.

50 Fathoms Gin also won a Gold Medal in April at the American Craft Spirits Association Awards in Austin, Texas.

“We think our gin tastes really good, and we get great feedback from our customers. We decided to enter it in two of the most rigorous tasting competitions in the country this year, and were glad to see that the judges agreed with us,” said Heather Shade, the distiller who developed the gin recipe.

50 Fathoms Gin is a traditional-style gin, distilled in 125-gallon batches using juniper, coriander, cinnamon, locally-harvested spruce tips and Gold Nugget tangerines.

The San Francisco World Spirits Competition is considered the leading gauge for spirits trends and top-quality products in the country, as it boasts 41 of the world’s top professional palates serving as judges. The number of spirits submitted this year totaled 1,580 and represented 40 states and 66 countries. The gin category has seen a marked increase in entries, nearly tripling over three years.

Port Chilkoot Distillery’s products will be featured at the Juneau Chamber of Commerce’s “Spirits of Southeast” dinner and spirits tasting Saturday.
