Three Community Youth Development basketball teams posted top-three finishes at the Mike Jackson Memorial Shootout in Juneau last month.

Four Haines youth teams competed at the March 19-21 tournament. The girls’ “C” team placed second, and the boys’ and girls’ “B” teams finished third.

“Thirty-three kids played 23 games during the three-day tournament, including Finly Shull, fifth grade, who joined our boys’ ‘C’ team since his father (Jason Shull) was in town to play Gold Medal,” said Lori Giddings, who coached the girls with Tiffany DeWitt.

Matt Davis coached the boys, with assistance from some Gold Medal competitors during their breaks from tournament play.

The field included teams from Anchorage, Hoonah, Juneau, Petersburg, Sitka and Wrangell.

All-tournament honorees for Haines were sixth-grader Mark Davis and eighth-grader Haley Sweet-Cushing in the “B” division and sixth-grader Haley Boron and seventh-graders Kyle Strong and Kayliegh Fisher in the “C” division.
