Dr. Dave McCandless has launched a “Senior Exercise Club” at the Haines Senior Center, weekday mornings from 8 to 10 a.m.

McCandless said the point of the club is to get seniors moving, as even mild exercise can have long-ranging health benefits. For some older people, getting into the swimming pool can be difficult and icy steps and walks can pose hurdles at other facilities.

The senior center has a covered drop-off area for cars, free of ice and snow. It also has two stationary bicycles and a treadmill, and room for stretching and other forms of exercise.

He said he’s encouraging seniors who may be just starting to exercise. “When people come, I’ll help them figure out what machines or routines to try,” McCandless said.

He’s also interested in getting exercise for himself, he said. For more information, contact McCandless at 907-305-0633.
