If you missed the Haines Arts Council’s screenings of Oscar-nominated animated and live-action shorts, you can still catch the Oscar-nominated documentary shorts 1 p.m. Sunday in the Chilkat Center lobby.
Arts council president Tom Heywood said the council hasn’t previously shown the documentary shorts, but just happened to receive them in the mail this year with the other films.
The five films run for more than four hours. “People can come and go as they please. If they don’t want to see the whole thing, that’s fine,” Heywood said.
“Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1,” by Ellen Goosenberg Kent and Dana Perry, won the Oscar this year. The film focuses on employees who staff the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs suicide hotline, and the emotional strain, compassion and devotion that comes with the job.
“White Earth,” by J. Christian Jensen, explores the North Dakota oil boom through the eyes of four children and an immigrant mother. “Joanna,” by Aneta Kopacz, tells the story of a cancer-stricken young woman with only three months left to live.
“Our Curse,” by Tomasz Sliwinski and Maciej Slesicki, is the director and his wife’s personal story about their newborn son Leo, who is diagnosed with a disease called “Ondine’s curse,” which causes the sufferer to stop breathing when he or she falls asleep.
The Spanish-language “The Reaper (La Parker),” by Gabriel Serra Arguello, tells the story of a slaughterhouse worker who has killed 500 bulls a day, six days a week for the past 25 years of his life.
