The Haines Dolphins will host their second annual community swim meet 10 a.m. Saturday, March 7.
Last year’s meet drew about 40 participants in events such as an immersion suit relay, a wet T-shirt relay, and an “aquatic obstacle course” featuring hula hoops.
The entry fee is $5 and allows participation in multiple events, plus eligibility for door prizes. The meet is expected to last about two to three hours, said Dolphins coach Robert Butker, with “juicy prizes for the top swimmers.” He said one of the more interesting events is an aquatic take on the Iditarod, with swimmers towing rafts.
Sign-up sheets are posted at the swimming pool.
The meet is serving as a fundraiser for Butker’s medical expenses resulting from a dog bite that broke his left hand in January. He recently traveled to Seattle to have three screws inserted.
Butker said he was “very surprised and honored” when Dolphins’ board members suggested the meet serve as a fundraiser for him.
“I really like this community, and the good deeds that come from it,” he said.
