Jason Rettinger, police officer on duty, responded to my 10:30 p.m. 911 call Jan. 5 with a fire extinguisher and had a furnace fire under control when the Haines Volunteer Fire Department showed up in a few minutes. The firemen checked out the scene, including the oil tank outside, and averted what could have been a catastrophic event. Neighbors rounded up electric heaters to add to fireplace warmth.
