The Haines Borough pool is tentatively closed until Dec. 22 for replacement of the facility’s lights, though facilities maintenance technician Eddie Bryant said it may be open sooner.
Contractor Patrick Anderson started the work Monday to replace 78 aging, metal light fixtures with about 40 new plastic ones.
“We’ve needed to replace the lights above the pool for 15 years. Probably only 50 percent of them have been working. People just got used to it,” Bryant said.
The new lights will be more energy efficient, and Bryant estimated they will cut the pool’s energy cost by half.
“We hated shutting the pool down, but this is something we’ve been really excited to get,” he said. “I like to keep it safe. You need light for safety and we’ll save some money, too.”
Contractor Anderson’s company, Dynamic Electrical Contracting, put in the low bid for the work, which should come out to about $16,500.
