It’s sad to see a culture die slowly as it has here in Haines. There was once a man who knew he must do all he could to make sure it never happens. For all his worth, he kept everyone together with his wisdom and stories. Everybody cared for him. In all, he got them to re-create the tribe, ANB and ANS, and Raven House. Then he said we need a culture camp, and so he made it possible. We had it built at Chilkoot. Sacred grounds, below Raven’s Eye, the watcher.
We were taught respect. It was our aunts and uncles who taught us how to be. Now it no longer happens that way. We must also do as our elders have done, keep our culture alive and teach our people about respect.
