All residents and visitors are invited to a community Thanksgiving celebration sponsored by area churches, starting 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27 at the Haines School cafeteria.

Salvation Army of Haines, Port Chilkoot Bible Church, Haines Assembly of God and Sacred Heart Catholic Church are joining efforts to host the free meal, said Lt. David Kyle of the Salvation Army.

Kyle said his church would not be offering Thanksgiving meal baskets this year, due to a funding shortfall following recent mail solicitations. Kyle said it’s important for residents to understand that responses to by-mail solicitations arriving in mailboxes go only to local programs.

The church will solicit support to make Christmas food baskets available to needy families.

The church also is accepting donations to its food bank and seeking volunteers for holiday bell-ringing. Call 303-2355. Gifts also can be made to http://www.redkettleonline.org.

Upcoming food bank hours are 11 a.m. to noon on Nov. 24 and Dec. 18.
