A researcher who spent the last three summers here is seeking information about subsistence uses of salmon for her doctoral dissertation.

Rachel Wheat, a doctoral candidate at the University of California Santa Cruz, is writing a three-part study on how the availability of salmon affects eagle movement, bear activity and subsistence fishermen.

“The final part of my research will examine subsistence fishing behavior and the needs and opinions of subsistence fishermen,” Wheat said. Toward that end, she’s hoping to survey 200 local users of subsistence salmon.

She’ll be standing outside local stores with a paper survey that takes between five and 10 minutes to fill out. The survey is anonymous. “I’m looking at the behavior of all subsistence fishermen in the community, not individuals. What I’m looking at is what is the need and is that being met?”
