The Haines High School volleyball team posted a 1-4 record against Southeast foes at an Oct. 17-18 tournament in Wrangell.
“It’s a rebuilding year and it’s a very young team, so the score wasn’t really a concern at the coaching level; we just wanted the experience,” said Cassie Miller, who coached the team alongside Judy Erekson.
The Glacier Bears opened with a 3-0 sweep of Skagway, and then fell to Klawock, Craig, Metlakatla and Wrangell.
“The team as a whole had a few hiccups, but we were able to hold it together and work as a team,” Miller said.
She noted sophomore Olivia Wing suffered a concussion at the tournament but is expected back at practice next week.
Miller said junior Bailey Stuart and sophomore Jordan Stigen handled setter responsibilities for Haines, and junior Corinna Hill had strong play from the back row.
“Corinna was our libero, and I was extremely impressed with how quick she was on the floor,” Miller said.
The Glacier Bears will compete at another Southeast seeding tournament in mid-November at Craig.
