ED&D Inc./Haines Cable TV/Radio Shack Dealer was named Business of the Year by the Haines Chamber of Commerce at the group’s annual meeting and banquet Saturday night at Harriett Hall.
Owner Patty Campbell related the history of the business, starting as a radio repair company in Fairbanks, and running a cable TV operation in Barrow before settling in Haines in 1979, when cable broadcasts were tape delayed. The business celebrated its 35th anniversary here earlier this year.
“My success is due to the support of people in Haines and Skagway, who’ve stuck with me in good and bad times,” Campbell said. Campbell, who worked here nine years as a veterinary assistant, is a long-time volunteer for the Chilkat Snowburners and Emblem Club.
The Haines branch of First National Bank of Alaska won the group’s Customer Service Award. American Legion Post 12 won the Community Service Award. Port Chilkoot Distillery won the group’s Rising Star Award, given to a new business. The distillery opened a year ago.
Fifth-grader Natalie Jobbins, a junior raptor handler at the American Bald Eagle Foundation, won the group’s Youth Recognition Award.
