Rainfall this summer is running way above average but not setting any monthly precipitation records yet, according to Haines figures compiled by the U.S. Weather Service website.
In June, 4.54 inches of rain fell at Haines airport, compared to .05 inches, which is the average for June, according to the weather service. The month’s total is the second-highest on record, behind June 1985, which saw 5.22 inches of rain. The year 1987 ranks third for June rainfalls, at 4.50 inches.
The highest one-day rainfall in June was .73 inches that fell on June 22. The heaviest rain that ever fell on one day of June here came on June 10, 1951, when 2.07 inches fell.
Through Tuesday, 4.22 inches of rain have fallen this month, with a single-day high of 1.46 inches on the Fourth of July.
That total already puts this year into second place among all-time wet Julys, trailing only July 1950, which saw 5.49 inches total. The next wettest Julys came in 2007 and 2008, when 3.97 inches and 3.72 inches fell, respectively.
