Maya Feldman said she may put a price tag on “Three Little Birds Outside My Window,” a papier-mache statue she’s entering as an exhibit in the Southeast Alaska State Fair, but she’ll be keeping her colored-pencil drawing of a fox.

“It’s the best drawing of a fox I’ve ever done,” said Feldman, 9. “It’s a fox hiding behind its tail.”

Artwork and creations of all kinds can be entered for judging at the fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday. Exhibits of crops, vegetables and baked goods will be accepted 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30.

Other categories of exhibits include writing and music, Native-style arts, school projects, sewing, needlework, preserved foods, woodworking and more. Winning exhibits qualify for entry and free shipping to the Alaska State Fair in Palmer Aug. 21-Sept. 1.

Artist Feldman said winning a fair ribbon isn’t her top concern. “I just want people to see my artwork. I want to get it out there. I don’t do it so much for the winning or anything,” she said.

Fair supporters are invited to a work party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27, fair executive director Jessica Edwards said this week. They’ll assemble rides, put games together, clear brush and pick up the grounds. “We have a range of jobs for all levels of ability, technical, physical and mental.”

The fair will provide tools, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their cordless drills from home. The fair will provide a light lunch, coffee, water and snacks.

Edwards said she’s also encouraging performers to step forward and enter the “Southeast Alaska’s Got Talent” competition, the annual regional talent show that starts at 6 p.m. Thursday. The event has come to anchor the fair’s first day, she said. “People just like it so much and the crowd is so supportive.” Cash prizes of $400 go to the best youth and adult acts, who also qualify for the final round of “Alaska’s Got Talent” competition at the Alaska State Fair.

New additions to the fair this year include a tractor-pull competition featuring garden tractors Sunday in the Raven Arena, a Cajun food booth, and a new children’s carnival area and Kids’ Stage. Also, a new map of the fairgrounds is up at the fair gates and information booth.

Edwards said she still needs volunteers to operate rides and games. Reach her at 766-2476. The fair starts at noon Thursday, July 31. A schedule of Thursday and Friday fair events is published on pages 6-7. A schedule for Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be published in next week’s paper.
