Donations are being sought so young readers can help people in the developing world.

Each year, students reading five books or chapters in the Haines Public Library’s summer reading program can choose either a prize or to make a $5 donation to Heifer International, a charity that provides livestock and training to struggling communities.

About half-way through the program, 170 participating youngsters have depleted the initial $500 set aside for donations under the “Read to Feed” program, logging 9,312 books and chapters. Under the Heifer program, students can direct their gift either to programs providing honeybees, trees, or schooling for girls.

To donate, stop by the library’s front desk and ask to give to the “Read to Feed” program or write a check to Friends of the Haines Borough Public Library, Box 1089, Haines, AK 99827.

An anonymous donor provided the first $500.b
