Local nonprofits interested in receiving funding from the Haines Borough must submit their grant applications by 5 p.m. July 15.
Nonprofits that received funding last year must submit their progress and financial report describing how the organization spent last year’s grant by June 30.
Applications and instructions are available online and at the borough administration office on Third Avenue.
Mayor Stephanie Scott said the borough is making the scoring matrix available this year after applicants complained about not knowing how their applications would be evaluated.
“The scoring matrix is available with the grant application because that was a concern people had,” Scott said.
Applicants must identify which pot of money they want to compete for and why their nonprofit qualifies for that specific type of funding: the $32,500 “community chest” (which comes from the borough’s General Fund), the $28,760 from the Medical Service Area Fund or the $17,500 from the Tourism and Economic Development Fund.
Applicants must also explain how their projects support the Comprehensive Plan.
“There is a little bit more pressure on the applicant to really justify their project, because we’re spending public money and it really has to be a public benefit,” Scott said.
Applications will be scored by an ad-hoc committee composed of Scott, three members of the assembly, chief fiscal officer Jila Stuart and manager David Sosa or his designee.
Committee recommendations for funding will be made to the assembly by the end of August.
