A Skagway man was medevaced to a Seattle hospital Saturday night after being critically injured in a “dune buggy-type vehicle” accident at the gravel pit off Major Road.
Christian Racich, 43, was taken to the clinic and later flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after the dune buggy rolled over on an embankment.
Haines resident Sean Copeland was also involved in the accident. He was transported to the clinic and released.
Harborview staff said Racich was in the intensive care unit in serious condition Tuesday afternoon.
Haines Borough Police Chief Bill Musser would not release additional information Tuesday, and would not say whether alcohol was involved.
Police are actively investigating the matter, Musser said in a brief statement.
Racich is the former Haines harbormaster and was in town helping pour beer at the Southeast Alaska State Fair’s beer tasting event Saturday afternoon.
