Summer camps are sprouting in Haines.

Several programs are available in addition to better-known ones like Rainbow Glacier Camp and Lynn Canal Community Players’ Summer Youth Theater Conservatory.

The Takshanuk Watershed Council is offering a “Junior Master Gardener Program” for youths entering grades 4-8. The program will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for five weeks in June and July, meeting at the Starvin’ Marvin’ greenhouse near Fourth and Main.

Environmental education teacher Meredith Pochardt leads a hands-on program including trips to gardens, instruction on growing food, including composting, learning about interaction between different plants, and cooking vegetables. Registration is $75 per week. Call 766-3542.

Girl Scouts of Alaska will hold a camp July 7-11, open to all girls entering K-12, at the Presbyterian Church. Registration is $40 and scholarships are available. Outdoor activities, including games and arts and crafts, are aimed at service and leadership. Programs tailored to the community and what girls want to do. Haines teacher Kim Sundberg’s “Kimmie Camp” is open to girls ages 3-12, Mondays through Thursdays, June 2-July 31. Morning and afternoon sessions are offered at $20 per session or $40 for both.

The camp offers an adventuring curriculum on a Chilkat Valley theme and incorporates science, reading, writing, history and Native culture, and field trips to local parks and water fights. “They have to be prepared to get wet and messy. Rarely do they return dry and clean.” Call 766-3418.

Carly and Jackson Lehnhart of Juneau will offer Thunder Mountain Soccer Camp in Haines June 16-27. Open to boys and girls ages 3-15 for one week or two. Elementary teacher and guide Tracy Wirak is offering a science camp in cooperation with Sheldon Museum for students grades 1-8, daily from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students will be separated into three age groups, with three weeks of camp offered to each age group on a staggered schedule, June 2- Aug. 15.

Rainbow Glacier Camp offers Bible-based activities for youths entering grades K-12, including archery, hiking and cook-outs. Weeklong sessions for students separated into three age groups.
