What a great, professional and dedicated staff we have at KHNS, from general manager on down. As one of the newest board members, and 40 years as listener and volunteer in public radio, I’ve heard some of the best! The KHNS listeners and non-listeners alike have all benefited from our award-winning programs by shining a welcoming familiar public radio sound to Haines, for the traveler needing services from underwriters to what is happening right here and now.
We can add Margaret Friedenauer’s second place award for best daily news program to the latest achievements, second only to APRN. Friedenauer gained additional recognition with her third place in breaking news stories with her account of the sinking of the Neptune. You can bet ferry travelers and crews, cruise ship passengers streaming the NPR/APRN news hour, along with streamers from near and far away, are tuning in as our local news laps over into state and national news. They hear the best and spread a positive image of Haines. As a retired mariner aboard state ferries, I know this because I’ve done it since KHNS was formed and I would tune bridge radio for crews to listen as we turned our ships around in Skagway.
