Thankfully, what Elisabetta LoGuidice described in her letter last week is not the picture of homeschooling in Haines. For a picture, look no further than the pages of this newspaper. Homeschoolers appear here frequently in photos and articles describing their participation in academics, athletics, music and the arts, science and service projects, and travel and outdoor adventures. It is clear they are doing well both in “The Three Rs” and a variety of enriching endeavors.
So when you see, read, or hear about young people involved in good things around town, ask: Where is this child getting their education? It might be the public school. Or it may be independent home school. Or these days it could be a hybrid approach, perhaps utilizing the district’s own home school program.
I’m thankful that we have both a good homeschooling community as well as a good public school system here. These options can only make it easier to give our children the best possible education, and also attract new families to our town.
