A handful of Haines cross-country skiers competed under sunny skies in last weekend’s circus-themed 28th annual Buckwheat Ski Classic, which featured costumed competitors, a giant snow fort carved to resemble a circus train, and a post-race aerialist show.
About 300 racers competed in the annual event, held at Log Cabin, B.C. Most skiers hailed from Whitehorse, Y.T.
Men and women winners included: 50K: Dave Brook of Whitehorse, 3:03:40, and Janelle Greer of Whitehorse, 3:42:52; 25K: Chris Schmidt of Whitehorse, 1:12:35, and Holly Goulding of Whitehorse, 1:47:54; and 10K: Jeff Lister of Whitehorse, 0:37:39, and Lucy Steele Masson of Whitehorse, 0:36:23.
Haines 10K finishers included Jennifer Allen (1:13:56), Beth Bolander (1:35:08), and Eileen McIver (2:00:00).
Haines 25K finishers included Chip Lende (2:07:27), Clinton Talley (2:38:42), Jane Pascoe (2:39:30), and Tom Morphet (3:38:45).
Emma Dohrn competed in the 5K youth race with a time of 1:26:10.
