Alaska author Don Rearden will speak 4 p.m. Friday at the Haines Borough Public Library.
Rearden is an associate professor of English at the University of Alaska Anchorage. “The Raven’s Gift” is his debut novel, published in 2013.
According to his website, the novel “is a post-apocalyptic thriller about new teachers arriving in an isolated Yup’ik Eskimo village that gets hit with a deadly epidemic. After John Morgan’s wife dies, he must make a 1,000-mile trek across the Alaskan wilderness for help and encounters a blind Eskimo girl and an elderly woman. They need his protection and he needs their knowledge of the terrain and their companionship to survive. Reviews compare his work to Cormac McCarthy and Stephen King.”
Rearden on Friday will discuss “the stories that haunt us.” He will be at the library for a reading and signing from 4-6 p.m., with books available for purchase.
The Friends of the Library and the 49 Alaska Writers group are coordinating the event.
