As this paper hits Haines mailboxes, supporters of Haines Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) will be enjoying a great bowling party, the conclusion of our annual fund drive called the Bowl for Kids’ Sake. Haines BBBS gives huge thanks to our fundraisers and these Haines event sponsors: Lane sponsors Alaska Power and Telephone and Howsers IGA; pin sponsors Alaska Mountain Guides, and boosters Southeast Road Builders and The Uglys of Haines. Thank you! Another big thanks goes to Tomi Scovill and Team Parts Place, who again are sponsoring the Wii bowling competition, a benefit for Haines BBBS.  The Wii bowling competition and the bowling party are, both, Friday, March 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the middle school gym. Hope you didn’t miss it.

Fundraising aside, our agency goal is to meet the true community need for new mentors – men and women – and, through them, help children achieve greater success. In the coming months Haines BBBS will be advertising, directly, a challenging fact that is common in most mentoring programs: Boys are waiting for matches and men, especially, are needed. Haines currently has four boys waiting for Big Brothers.

Being a Big Brother means that two to four times monthly you share some easy, fun time with your Little Brother and build a consistent friendship. Match commitment is one year, minimum. We need more Haines men to cross the threshold to awareness; there is a significant need and a brilliant opportunity.
