Both Haines High School basketball teams opened the Region V tournament on Wednesday with losses to top-seeded Metlakatla.
The girls stormed back from a 21-3 halftime deficit to knot up the score late, before falling, 29-27. Senior Grace Jones had 10 points.
The boys followed with a 49-32 loss to the Chiefs. Senior Devin Light led the Glacier Bears with 11 points.
The girls were to play Thursday morning, with the Glacier Bear boys to follow. A loss would eliminate either team from the double-elimination tournament, while a win would advance the Glacier Bears to a Saturday morning runner-up contest for the right to advance to state.
