Besides dinner specials at local restaurants, Valentine’s Day weekend will feature three consecutive nights of live music, a pancake breakfast, a basketball tournament, a wine tasting and a chance to woo your sweetie with a visit from a large, dancing dog.
Haines Animal Rescue Kennel on Friday is offering “Hark-O-Grams,” a singing valentine featuring a person dancing in a dog costume, accompanied by a ukulele player performing a Beatles tune, delivered with a single, chocolate rose.
The duo also will deliver a message of your choice for the $25 fee. The dog “dances and howls a little bit and does different dog things,” said ukulele player Meghan Elliott. Delivery is limited to the townsite.
On Friday night, veteran jazz singer Julie Cozzi teams up with drummer Clay Good and pianist Tom Locher at Southeast Alaska Independent Living’s “Have A Heart” event, including an auction of locally-made, heart-themed art, a wine-tasting, hors d’oeuvres and desserts, 6:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds’ Harriett Hall.
Cozzi said the trio’s repertoire extends to more than 400 songs and she’ll choose some sweet ones. “There are so many love songs out there. The trick is not filling up the show with schmaltzy, sappy stuff. We’ll have some fun songs, too.”
On Saturday morning, Haines School fourth-graders will offer their ninth Valentine’s Day pancake feed, 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the school cafeteria. Between 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, all women are invited to pop into the Presbyterian Church’s annual Valentine’s Tea. Dating to 1970, the tea is akin to the British tradition of “afternoon tea,” featuring the church’s silver service, fine china, finger sandwiches and baked treats.
Live music opportunities include a performance by the local Irish Lords at the Pioneer Bar 10 p.m. Saturday and the Haines Arts Council’s Northern Light Showcase, featuring area performers, 7 p.m. Sunday at the Chilkat Center.
