Saturday, Dec. 14, in Haines is shaping up to be a holiday extravaganza filled with activities.
The jam-packed Saturday starts with a holiday bazaar, put on by ANS Camp 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Senior Center.
From the bazaar, pop in to the ANB Hall at 1, 1:30, 2 or 2:30 p.m. to take in a classical ballet performance of “Choir of the Bells.” The ballet will be put on by instructor Kim Sundberg’s older students. Admission is $1.
The Sheldon Museum open house runs from 1 to 4 p.m., and includes festive decorations, an antique toy exhibit, children’s crafts and live music.
The Visitor Center is also hosting an open house from noon to 3 p.m. where attendees can take photos with Santa and enjoy cookies and candies entered in the annual Cookie and Candy Contest.
Go and visit Santa’s main squeeze at 3 p.m. at the library for stories and songs with Mrs. Claus. The Mr. K Ukulele Players will also perform.
The annual Holiday Parade starts at 4:30 p.m. Line-up is at 4 p.m. at the former Elks Club on Main Street, across from Miles Furniture.
Annette Smith said she is still looking for five people to be the legs of the infamous Snow Dragon. “It looks good on your resume. You’re a Chinese dragon professional,” she said.
The dragon winds down Main Street as people run alongside passing out sparklers. “Pyrotechnics taunt the dragon as he roams down the street with his eyes flashing and nostrils smoking,” Smith said.
After the parade, hit up “Gifts for Grub” at the American Legion for a pulled pork sandwich. Bring a toy or $10, which the Uglies of Haines will use to give gifts to Haines children in need.
Cap off the evening with a comedic performance of “The Ladies of the Camellias” by the Juneau-based company Theatre in the Rough. The show starts at 7 p.m.
