Interested in trying your hand at Native carving?
An upcoming, four-session class sponsored by Community Education will offer students the chance to create a Tlingit panel under the instruction of veteran carver Jim Heaton of Haines. Tools will be provided.
The four class sessions – that will be held between Dec.10 and Dec. 19 – also are open to more experienced carvers interested in working on other projects. Students are welcome to drop in for a single session or all four, said Community Education Director John Hagen.
Each session is for 2.5 hours and costs $15. Classes will be held starting at 6 p.m. on Dec. 10, 12, 17 and 19 in the high school wood shop.
“This class is being offered with a different kind of format. Some people just want a place to go carve,” Hagen said.
Beginners will have the opportunity to create a panel about the size of the end of a shoebox featuring a Northwest Coast Indian design. Heaton is an accomplished carver with several local totems to his credit.
