Public radio station KHNS is hoping to raise $5,000 through an on-air auction Friday, Dec. 6. The auction will start online at the station’s website starting Nov. 29.
“It’s the first time we’ve ever done an auction like this. It should be a fun thing for businesses and for shopping,” said Leslie Ross, the station’s development director. The station will also hold a dessert auction every weekday during the auction, she said.
The auction builds on a similar, one-day fund-drive last year that raised $7,000 for station equipment upgrades. Proceeds from next week’s auction will benefit station operations.
Part of the impetus for the event was what to do with premiums donated for the station’s summertime fundraiser. The station discontinued use of premiums during the event, citing logistical headaches.
“This is a way of taking our premiums and utilizing them for the benefit of the station. We’re also hoping that this generates a lot of coverage to people who’ve made donations to the station,” Ross said. Donations have come from Haines, Skagway, Whitehorse, Y.T., Gustavus and Juneau, she said.
