The blue plastic containers with recycling symbols at the Haines post office are not being used for recycling materials. Whatever mail you deposit in them gets emptied into the post office dumpster and ends up as trash. Haines Friends of Recycling volunteers were not able to keep up with the volume of mail and trash that got deposited there each day, so they suspended their pick-ups a few years ago. The blue recycling containers, however, are owned by the U.S. Postal Service and are now used as wastebaskets. If you want to recycle any mail, you need to take it yourself to the recycling center.
