Haines residents can get in the Halloween spirit on Oct. 26 by dressing up and attending a screening of the international cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
The screening of the 1975 comedy/horror musical is a fundraiser for the middle school volleyball team. It starts at 8 p.m. at the Fort Seward Lodge and costs $5 per person.
Volleyball coach Cassie Miller, who is organizing the fundraiser, said she chose the “outrageous” film because of the fun times she had dressing up and going to midnight showings in Portland, Ore.
“It was always a lot of fun because people in the audience would get involved and yell back to questions in the movie and throw things,” Miller said.
Money from the fundraiser will go toward uniforms, practice gear and travel expenses for the Juneau tournament in April.
“Halloween is coming up and I wanted to do something for that, because not much really happens here around Halloween. I thought it would be a good opportunity for people to get out,” Miller said.
Attendees are encouraged to dress up. The film is rated “R,” so children will need a parent or guardian to attend, she said.
Middle school volleyball players will help organize and set up for the event, but will leave before the movie starts.
In 1991, protesters showed up at a KHNS fundraiser screening of the film and picketed outside the Chilkat Center, denouncing the film for portraying homosexual lifestyles.
