The Haines Borough is pursuing funding for the installation of more wood pellet boilers in borough facilities.
The assembly Tuesday approved submission of an application for a design and construction grant to the Alaska Energy Authority for the installation of pellet boilers in borough buildings.
A wood pellet boiler was installed in the Haines Senior Center last fall.
Executive assistant to the manager Darsie Culbeck said engineers came to Haines Monday to examine all borough buildings that burn more than 3,000 gallons of diesel a year, including the public safety building, library, museum, school, Chilkat Center, and old and new city shops.
“We’ll have the report on Friday on what buildings they think are the most likely and cost-effective ones to do, so that’s how we’ll base our moving forward on this grant,” Culbeck said.
“We looked at those but they may not pencil out that all of them make sense,” he added.
Culbeck said the report is being financed with funds remaining from a $25,000 grant for a wood pellet feasibility study the borough received in 2012.
Culbeck said he will have more information and solid numbers for the assembly at its next meeting.
The grant application is due Sept. 23.
