The Sheldon Museum will exhibit art from its permanent collection Sept. 23 to Oct. 31.
The museum will be showcasing its collection of local art accumulated over the years, giving people the opportunity “to see what we don’t normally have on display,” said interim director Christina Baskaya. “It’ll give them a viewing of our collection items that we have but don’t get to display that often due to space constraints.”
Some pieces date back to the turn of the last century, while others are more recent works the museum purchased through the Rasmuson Foundation Art Acquisition Initiative Fund, started in 2003. Other pieces were acquired as donations from the artists themselves or from collectors.
Pieces from the museum’s permanent collection are regularly displayed in the museum’s lower level, but the exhibit will be on a grander scale, Baskaya said. “We’re using as many (pieces) that will fit.” She estimated 20-30 pieces – including paintings, photos and sculptures – will be included.
The museum scheduled the exhibit to coincide with the Museums Alaska and Alaska Historical Society Joint Annual Conference scheduled for Sept. 25-28, Baskaya said. “We’ll have all these people from throughout the state in town… So we can show off our collection of local art.”
