Late last month I was invited to participate in a panel discussion on port development in Haines hosted by the Haines Port Development Council. I served as the Mayor of Valdez when the new port infrastructure was developed in the late 1970s and so greatly appreciated the invitation. I chose to drive to Haines so I would be able to be on my own schedule and my brother was able to join me on the trip. I am glad I drove. It has been a few years since I visited and I was struck by the magnificent entrance into Haines coming down the pass. I was given a tour of Haines by several folks and was reminded of just how special Haines is – so beautiful and rich in Alaska history. My father was stationed at Chilkoot Barracks prior to joining the Alaska Scouts and defending America on Alaska soil in the Aleutians during WWII. I have always enjoyed his recollections of his early days in Haines.
Not only was I struck by the sheer beauty of Haines but also by the can- and will-do attitude of the community. That is so refreshing in these days of pointing fingers at others rather than taking care of ourselves. I also must confess, even though I was raised in Prince William Sound, the salmon dinner I had at the bakery was without a doubt, the best salmon I have had.
