Danielle Narum and Derek Livengood were married Saturday, May 25, at Rainbow Glacier Camp overlooking Chilkat Inlet. Danielle is the daughter of Teena Scovill of Juneau and Don Narum of Haines. Derek is the son of Glenn and Betty Livengood of Haines. Danielle’s grandmother, Virginia Scovill of Haines, was in attendance, as were her brothers Jacob, Nathan and Lowell Narum. Derek’s siblings Rosalie, Edith and Andrew Livengood also attended. Heather McGee was matron of honor, Lindsey Jobbins was maid of honor and Kristin Kivvy was bridesmaid. Shannon McGee was Derek’s best man. Father Glenn and brother Andrew served as groomsmen. The couple’s 1-year-old son, Isaac, was ring bearer with 11-year-old Drenen McGee. Kirian McGee was flower girl. Danielle’s family, including aunts Tammy Jobbins and Tomi Scovill and uncle Tyler Scovill, prepared the reception food. Mom Teena was wedding coordinator and made a five-tiered cake. “My mom was amazing,” said Danielle. “The wedding couldn’t have happened without her.” Derek’s father Glenn built the 8-foot wedding arch and helped with flowers. Lindsey sang at the wedding and reception. Saturday’s sunshine helped make the day “perfect in every way,” said Danielle. The couple lives in Wasilla, where Derek is an electrician and Danielle is a stay-at-home mom.
Bike racks built by students in the high school voc-ed program are already getting plenty of use. Haines Borough Public Facilities Director Carlos Jimenez offered steel banding from the demolished Barnett water tank to instructor Darwin Feakes, who helped students design racks, incorporating fish shapes. Jimenez said the racks are “artistic and aesthetically pleasing.” Students Jordan Badger, Russell Clark, David Lockerman, Chris Olsen, Corey Piper, Zach Rossman, Caullen Taylor and Dalton Tuohy worked on the racks. They were installed at the library, the public safety building and downtown’s George Mark Park. “It’s really amazing we have a voc-ed program that can turn something like this out for us,” said Jimenez.
Joan Snyder welcomed niece Marie Glanz, son Clifford and Sarah Panovek, all visiting from Easton, Pa., last week. Marie’s daughter Rachel Kukull and son-in-law Travis Kukull traveled from Seattle. They spent time hiking, foraging for fiddlehead ferns and sightseeing, but missed out on catching that “big one” on a fishing charter. Travis was the chef for the beerfest banquet and served up to 250 guests. Friend and business partner Cody Morris helped. Travis and Cody own and operate the Gastropod restaurant in Seattle.
Teresa and David Land had a house full of family last week. Members gathered for Karissa Land’s graduation from Haines High School. Son Kirk Land and 14-year-old grandson Brandon Land traveled from Whitehorse. Daughter Cara Gilbert came from Juneau. Daughter Gwen Sauser, son-in-law Jamie Sauser and grandsons Jaiden and Eli came from Lacey, Wash. Son Luke Land also traveled from Lacey, with his pug Stanley in tow. Karissa will attend University of Alaska-Fairbanks in the fall, where she’ll be studying mechanical engineering and music.
Gabriel McGuire earned his doctorate degree in anthropology from the University of Indiana this month. He studied village life in Kazakhstan, where he teaches at Nazarbayer University in Astana. Gabriel is the son of Tom and Sally McGuire. He was homeschooled at Lutak and first went to Kazakhstan on a Fullbright scholarship in 2006.
Linguist Kerry Eggleston received her doctorate in linguistics and Alaska languages from University of Alaska-Fairbanks at a May 5 ceremony at University of Alaska-Southeast. Eggleston said she’d been working toward the degree for eight years. “You only get 10 years to finish it, so I thought I’d get the lead out,” Kerry said. UAF advisor Gary Holton was on hand to award Kerry her doctoral hood. Kerry’s parents Mark and Diana Edwards and mother- and father-in-law Gaylen Needham and Ernie Eggleston were in Juneau for the ceremony. Kerry is an independent linguist working on contracts for Sealaska Corp. and UAS. She lives in Juneau with husband Ajax, son Ryker and dog Sadie.
Parents Nelle and Larry Jurgeleit traveled to Northampton, Mass,. to see daughter Ellis Greene graduate May 19 from Smith College with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Blogger Arianna Huffington was commencement speaker. Other family members in attendance included aunts Michael Saunders and Douglass Greene of Sarasota, Fla., and three cousins. Douglass will be spending the summer in Haines. Ellis is in Sarasota for the summer.
Rainbow Glacier Adventures recently won a 2013 “certificate of excellence” from Trip Advisor, an Internet-based travel website. Only businesses that rank in the top 10 percent at the site win the designation. The company’s offerings include photography and walking tours. Joe Ordonez of Haines operates the company.
