Following a basketball-packed four days featuring high school games and the Dick Hotch Memorial Basketball Tournament, the Haines School will host another competition this weekend, this one for athletes in fourth through eighth grade.
The annual Triple Threat Tournament runs Feb. 22-24 and is expected to draw 16 teams total in “B” and “C” divisions, said Ralph Swinton, who is helping organize the event. The current slate of teams includes nine from Juneau, five from Haines, and two from Skagway. Haines has entered two girls’ teams and three boys’ teams.
Play is set to begin 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, and continue past 8 p.m. that night. Games are scheduled for both gymnasiums at the school. The tournament starts again 9 a.m. on Saturday, and there will be a $7 spaghetti dinner that evening. Championship games are Sunday at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
The top teams will earn trophies, and all-tournament honorees also will be recognized, at a closing awards ceremony.
Triple Threat is for spectators. Swinton said the Haines athletes are excited to compete at home. They’ve already played at tournaments in Juneau and Skagway, and will travel to Juneau again in March.
“They show their parents how much they’ve improved over the year,” Swinton said.
Volunteers are needed to referee, keep score and run the clock. For more information, contact Sarah Swinton at 766-2441.
