We would like to thank the parents and students who are participating in the 2013 Alaska History Day event for Haines with the theme “Turning Points in History.” History Day began in Cleveland, Ohio in 1974 and quickly grew to National History Day by 1980. National participation include over 600,000 students and 30,000 teachers. A great deal of respect and admiration is due to Haines Borough middle school teacher Mrs. Andriesen’s expert and prolonged effort to help all of her students be successful with their History Day projects.
The judges of the Haines, Alaska History Day projects help to create an event that is honest and fruitful by maintaining critical thinking and integrity throughout a weekend of work. They deserve a huge thank you for their thankless, anonymous task. Thank you to Mountain Market for feeding the judges for two days with delicious and nutritious “food for life and coffee to die for.” Thank you to local businesses for their civic display of kindness and support including: The Hungry Moose, Quick Shop, Sockeye Cycle, The Babbling Book, Bamboo Room, and Alaska Backcountry Outfitters. We also greatly appreciate the support of the Haines Borough police and the Haines Arts Council. With special recognition we want to thank two out-of-town businesses that provide a great service to the Upper Lynn Canal and who help support the Alaska History Day event: Wings of Alaska and the Haines/Skagway Fast Ferry.
