Students interested in attending or continuing classes at college, university or trade school next fall should fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by Feb. 15, said school counselor Lindsey Moore.

A meeting that will help parents and students with the form and provide other information will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 at Haines High School. “College Goal Alaska: Financial Aid Assistance” is sponsored by the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education.

Students can get started early by applying now for a PIN at http://www.pin.ed.gov.

“If there’s one thing a student needs to do in order to make themselves eligible for federal financial aid or the Alaska Performance Scholarship, it’s to fill out the FAFSA,” Moore said.

Parents attending the meeting should bring tax returns, W-2 forms and other financial records. “People can use 2011 tax returns and send a corrected version later and still meet the (Feb. 15) deadline,” Moore said.

Feb. 15 is the deadline to apply for financial aid at the University of Alaska and at many other universities, Moore said.
