Fifty-five residents, including about five from Klukwan and some visitors, jumped in Portage Cove on New Year’s Day during the 8th annual Polar Bear Dip. The previous attendance record was 32 dippers. Air temperatures that reached 32 degrees F. and no winds made the plunge seem mild in comparison to some recent ones. The event included hot chocolate for participants, a bonfire and burning of a stick figure named “2012.” Matt Davis photo.
