The Haines Arts Council will host performances by genre-bending musicians Robert Sarazin Blake and C.R. Avery 7 p.m. Sunday at the Chilkat Center.
Bellingham-based Sarazin Blake’s folk-punk style blends with musical and theatrical influences ranging from Bob Dylan to Garrison Keillor. Avery is a self-described “outlaw hip-hop harmonica player, beatbox poet, punk piano player, string quartet raconteur, rock and roll matador, and playwright.”
Arts council president Tom Heywood said the musicians are hard to categorize because they are so multi-dimensional, incorporating modernistic folk music, spoken word, and theatrics into their live performances.
“We don’t consider ourselves a folk society or a bluegrass society…so this definitely adds a different dimension to the season that we’re very excited about,” Heywood said.
Sarazin Blake and Avery are currently on a Canadian tour, but thought it might be fun to dip down into Alaska along the way.
“(Sarazin Blake) actually called me and described that he and C.R. Avery would be touring the Yukon on a Canadian grant and were interested in coming through Haines and Skagway,” Heywood said.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $5 for students, and $40 for families.
The arts council will host a local performance of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” put on by the Juneau-based company Theater in the Rough on Dec. 1.
