The Haines Borough school board will meet 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29 to appoint a new member and elect officers. The meeting will be held in the high school open area.

One seat is open on the board. Those interested in it should submit a letter of interest to the school by noon Friday, Oct. 26.

To fill a similar vacancy one year ago, the board took a vote by secret ballot, then voted in public to approve the results of the secret ballot.

Superintendent Michael Byer said he’d be speaking to board members in advance of Monday’s meeting about the process of voting on the appointment.

A vote to fill a vacancy on the Haines Borough Assembly in June 2011 caused a deadlock and led to a recall effort during the ensuing fall election.

The board’s next regular meeting is 7 p.m. Nov. 7.
