The third and final exhibition in the Sheldon Museum 2012 Six-Week Spotlight Series opens 5 p.m. Friday with a reception for Tresham Gregg’s showcase of paintings, sculpture and handmade puppets.
The show features new artwork, as well as pieces used in stage-shows and displays. Gregg’s acrylic paintings use various techniques, including a raised-sculpture effect. “These are the most recent of my attempts to create and define fantasy themes and images that reveal aspects of a different way of being and different frames of reference,” he said..
Gregg grew up here and was influenced by Northwest Coast Native art and Tlingit spirituality. He was in the Chilkat Dancers as a youth, where he learned about Tlingit legends. “It was fascinating to envision the supernatural realm,” said Gregg.
Gregg calls puppet-making his current passion. “Puppets are art that talks,” said Gregg, “and can reveal a lot about the human condition by slipping into a parallel universe and different perspective.”
