Haines School students will get an unexpected day off this week, and a four-day weekend.
No classes will be held at district schools Friday, Aug. 31 due to expected fumes from painting the gymnasium floor, superintendent Michael Byer said Wednesday.
The work — originally scheduled for the summer break — involves applying two finish coats.
The school looked at pressurizing the building to force fumes out, but the proximity of intake and exhaust vents made that problematic, Byer said. “It could suck up that stuff.”
Each finish coat requires two days to, so paint will be applied Thursday and again Saturday. School is dismissed Monday for the Labor Day holiday.
Byer said the missed day will be made up next spring.
Replacement of the floor and installation of new bleachers is scheduled to be complete by the end of September.
