Warm sunshine this week was making it seem like a distant memory, but rain and cold temperatures early last week set several daily weather records in the Chilkat Valley.
Meteorologist Richard Lam of the National Weather Service in Juneau said the high temperature of 54 degrees F. on Tuesday, July 10 at the Haines airport was the lowest high for the day on record here.
The previous “lowest high” for the day was 56 degrees F., set in 1983. The 30-year average for July 10 is a high of 63 degrees.
A high of 56 degrees on Monday, July 9 also tied a record for the lowest high, set in 2008. The average high for the day was 63.
Rainfall on July 9 of .82 inches smashed a previous record for the date of .30 inches set in 1973. The 30-year average for precipitation on July 9 is .05 inches.
Town weather records go back to the 1950s, but there are reporting gaps.
The weather service has records from the U.S. Customs station since 1989. A minimum temperature of 35 degrees F. on the evening of Wednesday, July 11 broke a previous record low for the date of 44 degrees set in 2006.
A temperature of 37 degrees F. there on the morning of Thursday, July 12 set a daily record, topping a low of 42 degrees set in 1996.
Lam said weather records were set across Southeast Alaska last week.
