Following a recent public meeting in Haines, state parks officials are gathering public comments on plans for a bear-viewing platform along the Chilkoot River, as well as on potential short-term and long-term management and infrastructure changes in the busy river corridor.

Posters listing potential changes, as well as maps and examples of platform design are up at the Haines public library. The same information is posted online at the Alaska Division of Parks website. For more information, contact Lucille Baranko at 907-269-7506 or [email protected].

The posters, as well as an update on Chilkoot issues, can be found online at http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/plans/chilkootlk/chilkootriver.htm.Comments on plans also can be made to baranko’s e-mail address.

Close encounters between brown bears and sport fishermen and tourists along the narrow, river corridor have raised concerns for officials with parks, wildlife and public safety agencies.
