Residents around Klukwan can now get cell phone service in the area around the village, following completion of a tower behind the village last month by Alaska Communications Systems (ACS).

A company press release says starting Oct. 5 village residents now get “wireless voice and 2G data speeds.”

Customers say they’ve gotten service at Chilkat Lake weir, 19 Mile and to near the junction of Haines Highway and Mosquito Lake Road.

Cell phones on the ACS network, including those sold at Alaska Power and Telephone in Haines, work in the village.

Local cell service previously extended only to 10 Mile Haines Highway. There’s still no cell phone service between Mosquito Lake and Haines Junction.
