Through Tuesday afternoon, 17 moose had been taken in the local subsistence moose hunt, including two sub-legal bulls.
A sub-legal bull taken this week had the wrong antler configuration to meet the hunt’s three-brow-tine allowance, said biologist Anthony Crupi. Nine of the legal kills were bulls with spiked or forked tines, Crupi said.
Spiked or forked antlers generally occur in smaller bulls, possibly reflecting high calf survival during a winter of scant snowfall last year, Crupi said. “We had good calf recruitment last year and I bet we had good calf survival last winter.”
The hunt continues through Oct. 7.
