A task force aimed at combating alcohol abuse will launch a series of public service announcements aimed at discouraging drinking.
Announcements will include teens giving a message that it’s “cool” not to drink, community members “telling their stories” and police providing information on penalties associated with alcohol-related offenses, including for providing alcohol to minors.
A poster campaign also was discussed at the group’s most recent meeting.
The group will be seeking borough assembly and school board resolutions in support of their efforts. They’ll also seek endorsements from local tribal governments and Native organizations.
Twelve residents attended a Sept. 21 meeting of the task force, formed in the wake of a recent death and severe accident involving young people and alcohol. Attendees included school superintendent Michael Byer and student council advisor Rene Martin.
Martin said student council class meetings this fall will brainstorm new activities outside school walls. “We’re trying to look at the positive and what the borough could do this winter to provide activities for kids. We’re not going to have a new rec center this winter.”
During parent-teacher conferences at the school and during Red Ribbon Week, police will provide materials aimed at helping parents guide teens.
At its most recent meeting, the group also discussed sponsoring a “family games night” or alternative activities for the community.
The next meeting of the task force is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 5 at the assembly chambers.
Borough police chief Gary Lowe is the group’s chair. “I am very encouraged about the direction we are moving, and the fact that we are moving, and not just sitting around talking.”
