Stacey Haas and Tyler Scovill were married Saturday, Sept. 10 at Lookout Park before family and friends. In attendance were Stacey’s parents, Chip and Kandus Strong and Stacey’s children, Rachel Haas, who served as maid of honor, and Nathan Haas, who served as ring bearer. Stacey’s brother Barry Ellsworth was in attendance, as well as Stacey’s friend, former resident Krista Skannes, who came up from Juneau. Tyler’s sister Tomi Scovill and his brother-in-law Jim Schnabel joined the celebration with Tyler’s best man, Jim Mock, and Tyler’s nephew Lowell Narum. Tyler’s mom, Virginia Scovill, was out of town but helped with wedding preparations with Tyler’s sister Tina Scovill, who made a carrot cake with hand-decorated flowers for the dinner reception at the Elks Lodge. The couple will honeymoon in Whitehorse.
Former summer residents Kenny Soldano and Natalie (Larson) Soldano were in Haines recently. The couple was married Aug. 22, 2010 in Snohomish, Wash. and together owns a Seattle-area carpentry business. They visited Rainbow Glacier Camp, where both have worked, attended youth group and Bible studies, enjoyed many meals with friends and caught the weekend’s volleyball games.
Crystal and Al Badgley helped settle their son Hunter into his new digs at Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. The three arrived in time to shop for last-minute essentials and attend the freshman orientation that included parents. Crystal was impressed with the friendliness on campus from students, staff and parents.
Maggie Stern and Sean Bryant are home from their late-summer tour of Alaska’s state fairs. They attended the Tanana Valley State Fair in Fairbanks, where they operated a booth offering hair extensions and airbrushed temporary tattoos, as well as the Alaska State Fair in Palmer. They saw Heather Lende in Palmer, who had tickets to see Garrison Keillor at the fair, as well as Fran Daly and Mario Benassi, Jr., who competed in the Alaska’s Got Talent show.
The Friends of the Haines Borough Public Library are kicking off their annual raffle this week. Board members Nelle Jurgeleit–Greene and Rayne Litera had the idea to try a new approach this year. Instead of the Friends’ traditional raffle of items donated from local businesses, the Friends are raffling a brand-new 64 GB Apple iPad 2. Only 300 tickets will be sold for the drawing, which is set for Nov. 9. Tickets are $10 and are on sale at the library, through board members and at various locations around town including the Babbling Book and the bank, where the iPad will be on display. All proceeds benefit activities and programs to enhance our library.
Alice and Harold Morden are in Haines for a month with their son Kris Morden and grandson Harley Morden. Alice and Harold were teachers for 30 years in Haines before retiring to Northern Ireland. They live in Ballintoy, a village of 200 people on the north coast. The Mordens are connecting with old friends, including Ron and Jean Smith, Mary Asper, Doris Ward and Donna and Wayne Walters. They will spend a few days in Juneau with Steve and Jan McPhetres.
Former residents Kathy and Andy Eggen were in Haines recently. They celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary during their visit and enjoyed catching up with friends. The Sitka couple rode the ferry from Juneau with Rose and Al Risley, who were coming to town to send Al off on a hunting trip with friends, including Lyle Huff and Terry Friske. Daughter Sarah Eggen and Chad Dennis of Bozeman, Mont. were married Aug. 13 at the home of Chad’s uncle in Bozeman. Kelly Hansen served as a bridesmaid. The couple met in Bozeman when Sarah was a student at Montana State University. Chad is the son of Dan Dennis of Great Falls and Joann Dennis of Bozeman. The couple resides in Fort Worth, Texas, where Sarah works as a nanny and Chad is a railroad dispatcher.
The Green family logged 5,146 miles on their van during a summer road trip to visit family. They drove to Whitefish, Mont. to attend the 90th birthday party of Shannon’s grandmother, Margaret Terning. The party of 85 people included a slideshow, roast pig and swimming in the Stillwater River. After six days in Montana they headed to Hailey, Idaho to visit Jim’s brother, Bill Green, and then to Steilacoom, Wash. to see Jim’s brother David Green. The family traveled on to Sequim Bay State Park for another family reunion that included Jim’s sister, Mary Lou Green, and her family, who sailed from the San Juan Islands as well as his sister Laura Green and her husband from Port Angeles. Jim’s parents, Bill and Gerry Green, were park of the family campout, as well as Shannon’s parents Jerry and Brenda Thorn.
Frank and Ramona Holmes are home in Haines for about a month, following an extended absence that included medical treatment for both. They arrived in Haines on the ferry and were greeted by members of the Haines Friends of Recycling board, who ended their meeting early to welcome the longtime HFR volunteers. Ramona and Frank will head south again for further treatment, but both are happy to be home for now. "We’re so thankful for the wishes, prayers and emails from everyone," Ramona said.
