Southeast Alaska Independent Living (SAIL) recently completed a project that was partially funded by a grant from the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation. I wanted to take this opportunity to let the community know about the project (The Haines Consumer Service Fund), as well as thank the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation for making a real difference in the quality of life for many residents living in Haines and Klukwan.
The Haines Consumer Service Fund (CSF) helps seniors and people with disabilities secure assistive technology, home modifications, education, or other assistance so that they can become or remain independent in their home, their workplace, or their community. For example, last year the CSF helped secure items such as a walker, grab bars, low-vision telephone, and a hearing device called a “pocket talker.” The grant also helped an individual with literacy tutoring. Another person used the fund to help pay for repairs to their wheelchair. These are just a few examples of the direct impact this project has on our community – impact that we could not have made without the support of the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation.
SAIL often collaborates with other agencies to best meet the needs of mutual consumers. I would like to extend a big thanks to Lynn Canal Counseling, REACH, Cornerstone Home Health, Hospice of Haines, SEARHC, and the Haines School District for all your efforts. It is nice to live and work in a community that truly cares for each other.
