I was shocked this spring with the prices of both state and federal fees and store items. I understand the need for the businesses and state and federal offices to survive. But we, the people of this valley, are suffering under these 30 to 40 percent price increases. Most of the people in this valley are on a fixed income. Older folks and women with children are bearing the brunt of this form of economic cannibalism. We can continue as we are doing; simply allowing our friends and neighbors to struggle and finally move away and by doing so, hurt the remaining businesses. Or, we can come together and brainstorm a solution. I suggest a town hall-style meeting for the whole town to come to and put forward ideas. We can allow this tragedy to continue unabated or we can rise to our potential and save the soul of Haines. The decision is yours.
